Should I use felt or synthetic underlayment under my tile roof?
For a tile roof in coastal North County San Diego, we recommend a high-temperature synthetic or self-adhered underlayment over traditional organic felt in almost every case. Synthetic resists the heat buildup under tile, does not dry out and crack the way asphalt felt does, holds fasteners better, and lasts far closer to the lifespan of the tile itself. Felt still works, but it becomes the weak link that forces you back onto the roof decades sooner.
Under an asphalt shingle roof, the underlayment is a backup. The shingles are the primary waterproofing and the felt underneath rarely sees water. Under tile it is the opposite. Tile is a shedding surface, not a sealed one. Wind-driven rain, and we get plenty off the ocean here, blows up under the tile and lands directly on the underlayment. That membrane is doing real waterproofing work every time it rains.
So the underlayment choice on a tile roof is not a minor spec detail. It is the decision that determines whether you get back on the roof in 20 years or in 40. That is the whole reason we take the felt-versus-synthetic question seriously instead of defaulting to whatever is cheapest.
Asphalt-saturated felt, the black rolled paper most older roofs use, is proven and inexpensive. Two layers of 30-pound felt was the standard tile underlayment here for decades and plenty of those roofs made it past 20 years. It is not junk.
The problem is how it ages under tile specifically. The trapped heat drives the oils out and turns it brittle. It cracks along fastener lines and batten lines. It tears more easily during any future work. And it does not tolerate being walked on once it has hardened. Felt is a fine 20-year product in a spot that is not superheated, which is exactly what a tile roof is not.
Modern synthetic underlayments are woven or spun polymer sheets, and the good ones are rated for the high temperatures found under tile. They stay flexible, do not dry out, resist tearing, and grip fasteners without the gasketing issues felt develops as it hardens. Self-adhered products go a step further, bonding to the deck and sealing around every fastener that penetrates them, which is a real advantage in valleys and at penetrations where wind-driven water concentrates.
On coastal roofs the fastener-sealing behavior matters. When the marine air corrodes a nail and it works loose, a self-adhered membrane still has an intact seal around the hole. Felt just has a widening tear.

We are not dogmatic about it. If a homeowner is genuinely planning to sell inside a few years and wants the lowest upfront number, or the roof is a low-priority outbuilding, felt is a defensible choice and we will install it properly. There is nothing wrong with the material used honestly.
But for the primary residence you plan to keep, spending a little more on a high-temp synthetic or self-adhered underlayment is the clearest value in the entire job. The labor to lift and relay your tile is the same either way. Pairing that labor with a 20-year membrane instead of a 45-year one is where people accidentally waste money. You pay for the lift-and-relay work twice.
We relayed a tile roof on an Oceanside home a while back where the neighbor two doors down had the same builder-grade concrete tile and had reroofed the underlayment a few years earlier with a contractor who used standard felt to hit a lower bid.
Our homeowner asked, fairly, why we were quoting more for what looked like the same job. We explained the underlayment difference and installed a high-temp self-adhered product across the field with synthetic in the transition areas.
The follow-up came the next winter, during a stretch of hard, wind-driven rain blowing straight in off the water. The neighbor with the fresh felt already had a damp spot showing at a valley where wind had pushed rain up under the tile and found a lap that had not sealed well. Our roof was dry. Same weather, same tile, same street. The only variable was what went down under the tile, and that is exactly the point we try to make before the work starts rather than after.
The homeowner circled back to thank us that spring, and what stuck with them was not that our roof stayed dry, it was realizing the neighbor was going to be back on their roof decades sooner. Both households had paid roughly the same labor to lift and relay the same tile. One of them had simply attached a 20-year clock to that labor and the other a 45-year one. When we explain the choice that way, most people stop thinking of the membrane upgrade as a cost and start seeing it as the whole reason the job was worth doing.
