How long is it okay for water to sit on a flat commercial roof?
Industry practice treats water still standing 48 hours after rain, in dry weather, as ponding that shortens roof life and can void warranties. Brief puddles that drain within a day or two are normal. Persistent ponds accelerate membrane aging, add structural load, breed algae, and concentrate leak risk, so they should be diagnosed and corrected rather than ignored.
No flat roof is truly flat, and no membrane sheds water instantly. After a storm you will see puddles, and that is fine. The recognized line, and the one most single-ply manufacturers use in their warranty language, is 48 hours. If water is still standing two days after the rain stops and the weather has been dry, that is ponding, and it is working against you.
The reason the clock matters is that a short puddle is just water waiting to evaporate or find a drain. A 48-hour pond means the roof physically cannot move that water. Something is wrong with the slope, the drains, or the deck itself.
Owners often shrug at a pond because nothing is leaking today. That is exactly why it is dangerous. Ponding damage is cumulative and invisible until it isn't.
