Tile Roofing
The fastest way to turn a small tile repair into a big one is to walk the roof carelessly. Where you put your foot on a tile decides whether it survives.
How do you walk on a tile roof without cracking tiles?
Step on the lower third of each tile, the part supported by the tile below it and the batten, never the middle or the unsupported nose. Keep your weight low and distributed, walk with soft-soled shoes, and move along the headlap where tiles overlap. On brittle coastal clay we sometimes use foam walk pads or set weight on hips and valleys. The wrong footstep is why so many tile roofs have hidden cracks.
A roof tile is strong where it is supported and fragile where it is not. Each tile overlaps the one below it and rests on a batten near its head. The nose, that lower lip hanging over open air, has nothing under it. Put a full-grown adult's heel on an unsupported nose and the tile snaps like a cracker.
This is the single most common source of the cracked tiles we get called about in Carlsbad. It is almost never the weather. It is a solar installer, an antenna tech, a painter, or a well-meaning homeowner who climbed up to clear a gutter and walked the roof like a sidewalk.
The safe zone is the bottom third of the tile, low and toward the overlap, where the tile below and the batten both support the weight. On flat and low-profile tiles you can sometimes walk the headlap where two courses meet. On high-profile S-tile or barrel clay, you step in the valleys between the humps, not on the crowns, because the crowns crush.
Weight matters as much as position. We keep our center of gravity low, avoid sudden landings, and never pivot hard on one foot. Hips, ridges, and valleys carry load better than open field, so an experienced roofer routes across those wherever the path allows.

Footwear is the cheapest protection there is. Soft, clean, flat soles spread load and grip tile that gets slick with morning marine moisture. Hard boots and cleated soles concentrate weight and scratch the surface coating on concrete tile.
On fragile or high-value clay, especially older barrel tile common on Spanish-style homes in Rancho Santa Fe and San Juan Capistrano, we sometimes lay foam walk pads or planks to bridge across a work area. It is slower, but it means we are not trading one repair for three new cracks.
Some tile roofs should not be foot-traversed by a homeowner under any condition. Steep pitches, wet or mossy tile, and brittle vintage clay are all reasons to stay off. The marine layer leaves North County tile damp well into the morning, and damp tile is slick tile.
If you just need to look at something, use binoculars from the ground or a phone on a pole. If someone actually has to be up there, that is what a crew trained on tile is for. We would rather send someone who knows where to step than replace the tiles a good-intentioned climb left behind.
We were called to a San Marcos home for a leak that started right after a solar array went in. The homeowner assumed the mounts were the problem. When we got on the roof, the mounts were actually fine, but the field around the array told the whole story.
There were cracked and chipped tiles in a clear path leading from the eave up to the array and back, exactly where the install crew had walked. Several tiles had snapped noses where someone stepped on the unsupported edge. Two had crushed crowns from being walked on a high-profile section the wrong way.
We replaced eleven damaged tiles, checked and patched the felt under the worst of them, and reseated everything the array installers had disturbed. The leak stopped. The lesson for the homeowner was simple: the panels did not fail, the footsteps did. Anyone going up on tile needs to know where the tile can carry them.
