What TPO and PVC Actually Are

Both TPO and PVC are single-ply membranes, meaning the roof is one continuous sheet of plastic-based material rolled out and heat-welded at the seams rather than layered like old built-up gravel roofs. That welded seam is the big reason single-ply took over commercial flat roofing: instead of relying on adhesives or tar that break down, a hot-air weld fuses two sheets into what is effectively one piece of material.

TPO is thermoplastic polyolefin, a blend of polypropylene and rubber. PVC is polyvinyl chloride, the same base polymer family as a lot of durable plumbing and industrial products. On the roof they look similar, usually a bright white surface, but they behave differently once the sun, salt air, and rooftop equipment start working on them. Where PVC Pulls Ahead

PVC earns its higher price on roofs that see grease, oils, or chemical exhaust. PVC also tends to hold its seam strength longer. The catch with TPO is that formulations have changed a lot over the years, and older or budget TPO products earned a reputation for premature cracking under UV. The membranes we install today are far more UV-stable than the early generations, but this is exactly why the manufacturer and the thickness you choose matter more than the TPO-versus-PVC label alone.

The Coastal UV and Salt Factor
