How long does a roof replacement take?
A typical single-family asphalt shingle replacement runs one to three days once work starts. Tile roofs commonly take longer, often three to six days or more, because tile is heavier, slower to load, and the underlayment work is meticulous. Permitting, HOA approval, material lead times, and coastal weather can add days or weeks before the crew ever arrives.
People ask how many days the roof takes and picture crews on the roof. But the calendar starts well before that. In North County we deal with city permits, and in many neighborhoods HOA approval of material and color. Those can add a week or several depending on the jurisdiction and the association's meeting schedule.
Material lead time matters too. Standard asphalt shingles are usually stocked. Specific tile profiles, colors, or discontinued matches can take longer to source, which is one reason we settle material choices early rather than at the last minute.
For a straightforward single-story composition roof, we are often on and off in one to two days: tear-off and dry-in on day one, new shingles and cleanup on day two, sometimes all in a single long day on smaller homes.
Complexity stretches that. Steep pitches, multiple stories, lots of valleys, skylights, and dormers all slow a crew down because there is more detail work and more safety setup.
Tile is our specialty, and it is honestly slower work. The tile has to come off and be loaded out, the old underlayment stripped, new underlayment installed carefully, and then the tile set or new tile laid course by course. On a lift-and-relay, we stack and protect the existing tile, which adds handling time but saves material.
Weight is a factor too. Loading tile onto and off a roof safely is not something you rush. A tile job that a homeowner expects to mirror their neighbor's two-day shingle project can reasonably run three to six days or beyond.
North County has mild weather, which helps, but the marine layer and morning fog are real. We will not dry-in a roof or leave underlayment exposed when heavy moisture is rolling in off the ocean. Occasionally we pause a crew mid-morning until the marine layer burns off so we are not trapping moisture under a new roof.
Coastal winter storms can also push a start date. We would rather delay a day than install into weather that compromises the system.

On day one you will see the dumpster and material staging, then tear-off and dry-in. Middle days are installation. The last day is detail work, final flashing, and a full cleanup including a magnet sweep for stray nails around the property.
